Model-based monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics of hydrogen energy systems.

Pierpaolo Polverino, Ph.D.

Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Salerno.

In the current energy transition towards sustainable solutions and net-zero emissions, hydrogen-based energy conversion systems represent a strategic alternative to conventional technologies. In the last years, the market competitiveness of fuel cells and electrolysers, either working at low or high temperatures, substantially improved thanks to the strong financial supports of governing bodies, such as the EU funding programs of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, whose main objective is to contribute to EU Green Deal and Hydrogen Strategy through optimised funding of R&I activities. Nonetheless, improvements are still required, from both manufacturing and operational management point of view, to make end-users accept these technologies as viable alternative to conventional ones. Concerning the enhancement of operational management, the design of advanced algorithms capable of real-time monitoring, fault diagnosis and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) inference can boost performance and durability of hydrogen-based systems. Therefore, this lecture aims at giving an overview of the design and application of conventional and advanced model-based monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic algorithms applied to fuel cells and electrolysers. The lecture will present an overview of the main objectives, features and issues related to the design and implementation of these algorithms, using either conventional or Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Examples will address case studies related to Solid Oxide and Proton Exchange Membrane technologies.
